Batemans Bay Scenic Lookouts ...

There are many wonderful ways to look at Batemans Bay and many of these are from the area's scenic lookouts. All give breathtaking vistas of the coast and hinterlands. Marvel at the blue hued mountains, magnificent sunsets and sunrises, and vast stretches of sparkling beaches and waterways. Please be careful with fire and on our roads and remember to take your rubbish with you. Don't forget your camera!

Here are just a few of our favourite spots from which to appreciate the natural beauty which is Batemans Bay ...

BIG BIT LOOKOUT - North of Batemans Bay. This vantage point affords extensive vistas up and down the coast and out to the Budawang mountains in the west. You can also see glimpses of Durras Lake and other waterways. This is a great lookout to visit early in the morning for the sunrise over the ocean and then to return to in the evening to catch the blazing sunset over the ranges. Glorious contrast in beauty and a photographer's dream await those who venture.
Follow the Princes Highway north of Batemans Bay for around 14kms. Just after you pass a large layby and rest area, you will reach the Big Bit Lookout turnoff on your left. If you come to Benandarah's garage, you have gone too far, go back 500metres!

FOLDERS HILL LOOKOUT - North Batemans Bay. This lookout on the northern edge of town includes a small park and offers you views along our treasured river and of parts of Batemans Bay itself. This is another great picnic spot and is within walking distance of the centre of town.
Take the Kings Highway at its junction with the Princes Highway just north of the bridge. Immediately turn left into old Punt Road at the roundabout and then right into Penthouse Place. Folders Hill is at the top of this short street.

HOLMES LOOKOUT - West of Batemans Bay. If you'd like to see a bird's eye view of the famous forested Clyde River winding its way to its estuary then don't miss this popular spot. Look east and view the river's entrance at Batemans Bay, its journey under the bridge and beyond to the sparkling Pacific. Look west up river and to the mountains across tall eucalypt forests. The air doesn't get much cleaner than this anywhere.
Holmes Lookout has picnic tables and BBQs and is set amongst beautiful tall gums which host vibrantly coloured parrots and laughing kookaburras. It is a great spot to marvel, eat and relax all year round.
Follow the Kings Highway (Canberra Rd) just north of Batemans Bay bridge for 2.5kms. Rotary Drive then turns off to the left and takes you 1.3kms to the lookout.

OBSERVATION HEAD LOOKOUT - The suburb of Batehaven is one of Batemans Bay's original and best and is partly built on Observation Head which rises above the river mouth and overlooks the Clyde River, Snapper and Tollgate Islands, the Pacific and parts of Batemans Bay. This is another dream spot and is also a good starting point for walks along Corrigans and Caseys Beaches.
Observation Avenue is easy to find. It is off Beach Road on the river and ocean side just east of the Batehaven shopping centre.

ROUND HILL LOOKOUT - South of Batemans Bay. More fantastic views of the Clyde River and of Batemans Bay can be appreciated from here which also hosts a fire tower. You can see some spectacular southern aspects from Round Hill which can't be seen from the other lookouts. This spot is also very close to the town.
Head south on the Princes Highway towards Mogo and Moruya. Less than a kilometre past the southern outskirts of Batemans Bay and just past the sawmill, look for the Round Hill Fire Tower sign. Turn here and within another kilometre you will have reached the lookout.
