The Southern Tablelands region covers a large area of the south east of New South Wales and is
widely used for farming and grazing. Some of the finest wool in Australia (and that means the best in the world) comes from this region and an attraction of particular interest is the Big Merino in Goulburn, the commercial and business centre of the region.
![]() Southern Tablelands - Big Sky Country The region has many natural and tourism attractions (such as the mysterious and sometimes foreboding Lake George) and is located on the plateau immediately above the coastal plain ( Clyde Coast ) described in other parts of this site. Other towns and centres in the region include the historic Braidwood (where the film "Ned Kelly", starring Mick Jagger was filmed), Bungendore (adjacent to Canberra), Crookwell and Marulan.
The Southern Tablelands is distinguished by its wide open spaces and rolling hills. This is rural Australia personified and travelling through this region provides a sharp contrast to many of the other regions in the South East of NSW. Visitors to Australia should complement their coastal or city tours with a visit to this region in order to complete their picture of rural Australia.
For further details on the region, we suggest you contact a Southern Tablelands Tourist Information Centre. ![]()
