Welcome to MITTAGONG

View over Mittagong from Mt Gibraltar

Mittagong is another of the Southern Highland's beautiful and charming towns. First settled in the early 1800s, it was established before its neighbours. Mittagong is situated on the northern side of Mount Gibraltar and is quickly accessed from Sydney and Canberra.

Look for the beautiful gardens of Winifred West Park. This park was named after one of the founders of Mittagong's famous Frensham School. This school, first established early this century, is recognised as one of the finest in Australia and its buildings and grounds are still offering quality education in a relaxing and picturesque environment today.

It was originally thought that the town held promise as an industrial centre with the establishment of mining companies in the area, however this was not to be and today the town stands as an unspoilt rural centre and as a tourist destination in its own right.

Many walking tracks and scenic drives are marked for your exploration. As well as viewing splendid natural scenery and beautiful established gardens, you'll witness the town's history with its variety of early Australian architecture. These restored and evocative buildings were often made from local sandstone and fine examples of them include stately homes, churches, banks, retail outlets, worker's cottages and Mittagong's railway station.

Accommodation is available in a good variety of motels, licensed hotels, bed and breakfast establishments and caravan parks. Shopping and entertainment is also readily available. A good range of eateries including romantic restaurants and coffee shops are all found close at hand.

Besides the wonderful array of natural sites to explore such as Lake Alexander and nearby Fitzroy Falls and Wombeyan Caves, other attractions include a rainforest butterfly house and the annual Dahlia Festival held each February.

Mittagong is central to all the sites and features of the Southern Highlands. Its proximity to the freeway and railway links to Sydney to the north and Canberra in the south make this town popular with tourists all year round.
